Why portfolio mapping is now a transformation control, not a planning artifact
In 2026, bank transformation is rarely a single program. - So what: Where does it overlap with other work (data, platforms, vendors, controls), and is that overlap intentional?
These questions map directly to duplication control. If two initiatives share the same capabilities or components but have different ownership, standards, and data definitions, the bank is likely creating parallel truth and duplicated controls.
The 2026 portfolio mapping template: fields and structure
The template below is designed to work as a one-page visualization and as a structured dataset (Excel, portfolio tool, or collaborative whiteboard). The fields are intentionally bank-relevant: service criticality, control outcomes, data lineage, and third-party dependencies.
1) Current state vs. future state baseline
- Baseline problem statement (one sentence)
- Current-state constraints (legacy dependencies, data quality, change windows)
- Target-state outcome (measurable: latency, STP, defect rates, resilience)
- Scope boundaries (in / out / conditional)
2) Strategic horizons and workstreams
- Horizon: 0–12 months (stabilize), 12–24 (modernize), 24–48 (scale)

How to use the template in governance: four disciplined steps
- Baseline the inventory: capture every initiative, including “small” projects that consume shared platforms or data domains.
- Run duplication reviews: identify initiatives with overlapping fingerprints and decide whether to consolidate, sequence, or stop.
- Govern change: treat portfolio updates as controlled decisions—new scope must declare its fingerprint, dependencies, and evidence plan.
